The game after that is even further in Sam’s past, makes clear he really did start the entire problem, then ends without anything really being figured out as we know the world is going to be meteor dropped in possibly a few months, but only maybe because there’s time travel happening and literally anything could happen but it’s clear the bad guy is still not stopped. The forth game is a prequel that nullifies the spin-offs by revealing Sam had already failed from the start of the first game and is trying to undo the mistake. Serious Sam starts with a man traveling to the past to stop a future villain and then continuing to make no progress for three games. The Shadowrun games from Harebrained Schemes probably come the closest, but there’s a lot more thematically going in in them alongside. DOOM and Devil May Cry ended up eating themselves with their own bloated egos and lore obsession. Borderlands has the feel, but it drifts a bit too far into memes and melodrama to really keep that up. There are few games I’ve played that kind of fit the subject matter. Serious Sam is also the most existential game series possibly ever made, in canon and in our world. One time, he stopped briefly from rescuing an alien race to find four bananas in the middle of a battlefield solely because he likes bananas. It is about a guy who wears cool sunglasses and has big muscles who shoots guns at bad monsters and makes the explosion. Serious Sam is a first person shooter series that has made a lot of weird branches since it appeared at the start of the new millennium. In other words, to ignore what the world around you says and choosing to live your life on your own terms. It is all about living authentically as your own person, not letting yourself be defined by the state or religion, to find true meaning when such a thing cannot possibly exist. “There is scarcely any passion without struggle.” -Albert Camus “To be or not to be…that is a serious question” -Sam “Serious” StoneĮxistentialism is a philosophy born of war and death, the realization of what mattered before not mattering driving people to a dark place of unknowns.
